Frequently asked questions

Do you have a code of conduct for YEC members?
Green Adelaide Education also has a Code of Conduct for students, which includes statements about the rights and responsibilities of students who attend Green Adelaide Education events and camps. The Code of Conduct outlines the ways in which students are expected to behave in order to treat one another with dignity, respect, sensitivity and fairness. The Code of Conduct for students can be accessed through our staff at any time, please get in touch if you would like a copy.

Can I access a copy of your child safe policy?
Green Adelaide Education has developed child Safe guidelines and procedures to demonstrate our strong commitment to creating and maintaining child-safe and child-friendly environments. All children and young people engaged with Green Adelaide Education have a right to feel and be safe. We are committed to the safety and well-being of all children and young people accessing our services and the welfare of the children in our care will always be our first priority. We aim to create a child safe and child friendly environment where all children are valued and feel safe.

Green Adelaide Education has developed a Code of Conduct for working with children, which all employees and volunteers must abide by. As part of this Code of Conduct, we have adopted the guidelines for interacting with children and young people from the Department for Education’s Protective Practices for staff interactions with children and young people. The Green Adelaide Education Child Safe Guidelines and Procedures are freely available on request to the children and youth who use our services, and their parents. Please contact us to obtain a copy.

What is the difference between a member and a mentor?
MEMBER
Selection process: By application, open at the beginning of each year. Selected on merit and geography by Green Adelaide staff.
Considerations: The council wants representation from across the state.
Term: Become members in Term 1 and are members for one school year.
Eligibility: Student in year 7-10, interested in the environment and sustainability.
Number: Approximately 60 members on the council.
Following year: Need to reapply through the member selection process in the following year to be a part of the YEC again. Members from the previous year will be notified when applications are open.

MENTOR
Selection process: Approached by Green Adelaide staff. Conversation between staff and student.
Considerations: Opportunity to share experience with other members whilst stepping back. Assist with culture of YEC.
Term: Become mentors in Term 1 and are members for one school year.
Eligibility: Ideally a year 9-11 student. Must have been a part of the YEC for at least one year as a member and demonstrated strong role modelling.
Number: Up to eight mentors per year. May change from year to year depending on numbers.
Following year: May be approached to be a mentor again.

How much time is required to be involved?
The YEC requires members to be available for three face-to-face events throughout the year- the Welcome forum (usually held late Term 1), the camp (held in Term 2), and the Celebration forum at the end of the year. Mentors are required to attend an additional one-day training before the first event.

Online meetings are held throughout the year, and whilst not compulsory, are a good way to stay in touch with other members, mentors and staff and share project ideas in between the face-to-face events. It is recommended that members try to attend at least one or two throughout the year, and more if they wish.

The other key time investment is in your YEC project. There is no set amount of time you have to spend on this, but as an idea it’s good to set aside at least an hour or so each week, on average. This is so you can keep your momentum going, build your project over the year, and have something to promote and share with others by the end of the year. More information about the project can be found on the projects page.

Who can I ask for help with my project?
Whoever you can think of! Parents, friends and family can all be great sources of support and might be able to offer ideas, provide creative feedback and even put you in touch with others who can help too. Also don’t hesitate to approach your teachers at school- they are also usually happy to help, especially if your project involves the school community.

Your mentors are always available to help out too, and will be represented at all of the online meetings as well as supporting you with project planning at the face to face events.

Likewise, staff members are always happy to assist in any way we can.  At the first event of the year, each YEC member will be allocated a key staff member they can contact via email at any time with questions or concerns. So if you get stuck, please reach out- there is no such thing as a silly question!

Where can I find information on how to get involved in my local environment?
This is a great question, and there are lots of places you can go to find out more. Check out our Connecting page for some ideas!
