Sustainability Forum 2015

Student representatives of the Youth Environment Council of South Australia met for their first event of the year – the 2015 YEC Sustainability Forum.

The forum, held in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, gave the students an opportunity to get to know each other, develop new skills and prepare for the year ahead. The students explored how we are connected to the environment through one or more of our senses and they had a chance to reflect on the ecological and social systems that are operating around us.

They also discussed what culture is and why it is important to a particular society, group or nation. Looking at the relationship between culture and values they brainstormed how we can change the way things are done if we put our minds to it. From a sustainability perspective, are there some things we should be doing differently?

The forum also gave council members the opportunity to meet the 2015 YEC student mentors. These mentors have been part of the council in previous years and were invited to become mentors because they demonstrated great leadership and role modelling . The mentors will have a significant role in supporting the new members and planning and running a lot of the activities at YEC events throughout the year.
The Youth Environment Council (YEC) of South Australia provides young people a voice in key environmental issues facing South Australia and gives them opportunities to take action to achieve a more environmentally sustainable future for SA.
