Southern Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Regional Event 2019
Since 2018, Youth Environment Council (YEC) regional events have been held to allow members opportunities to connect, engage in local environmental activities and to share their progress on their individual project.
On a beautiful afternoon in August, students from the YEC who live in Southern Adelaide gathered at Urrbrae Wetlands for an event co-run with NRM Education Officers.
YEC members from Urrbrae Agricultural High School were keen to show the students from other schools the sustainability aspects of the site. These included sharing how the wetlands capture and clean stormwater from the surrounding area, and how wetlands provide habitat for birds, bats, insects and other invertebrates, some of which were spotted during the site exploration.
Interestingly, a PhD student is currently measuring the level of methane emissions coming from the wetland. One of the YEC students explained this project to others in the group.
Staff from the Urrbrae Wetland Learning Centre helped the other students to undertake aquatic macroinvertebrate testing. They found some interesting water bugs which they examined under microscopes.
Finally, the students were able to speak with each other and NRM Education Officers about the projects they have been undertaking, share ideas and ask for advice ahead of the YEC sharing and celebration forum which will occur later this week.
