The YEC kicks off for 2024
On Thursday 21 March, the latest cohort of Youth Environment Council of South Australia (YEC) representatives were welcomed at Belair National Park by Green Adelaide Education staff to kick off the YEC for the 2024.
This Welcome Forum allowed the 41 high school students to come together for the first time, with some travelling from areas as far afield as the Murraylands and the South East of South Australia.
The day was focused on the students getting to know each other, sharing information and stories about their local environments, experiences and passions, and thinking about the individual sustainability projects that they will work on in their schools and communities throughout the year.
This was enabled through a range of fun activities, which included team building and leadership exercises, sharing past project ideas, discussing the sustainability topics that interest them and immersing in nature throughout the park through electives such as photography, bush walks, journalling and art.
YEC mentors – student leaders selected from last year’s members - helped guide these activities with lots of enthusiasm. They greatly assisted the Green Adelaide Education team in making their fellow YEC members feel welcome. They will continue to play an important leadership role in planning and supporting students during the next event for the year, a three-day leadership camp to be held at Arbury Park Outdoor School.
That’s where the real planning for their projects will get underway. We can’t wait!
